Honeybush Tea From South Africa

Honeybush tea is a herbal tea which has a sweeter taste than most teas and a fragrance of honey (hence its name). This tea is only grown in the Easter and Western Cape provinces of South Africa. Its 'cousin' Rooibos Tea is the herbal tea with a red color which is also grown in south-west South Africa. Although rooibos is more well known, honeybush is definitely worth checking out!

The tea is made from the honeybush, which is a shrub and the leaves, stems and flowers are used in the tea production. The name, no doubt, comes from the flowers of the bush, which are bright yellow and have a honey scent. The tea is harvested during the flowering period.

Honeybush tea has no caffeine is is very low in tannin but rich in antioxidants. It has been proven to be of value to people with digestive problems and heart problems as these symptoms are aggravated by stimulants. Even children are happy to drink this herbal tea as it is sweeter than other teas. Honeybush is predominately exported to Japan, Germany and Switzerland as these countries consider herbal teas to have many health benefits. In fact honeybush tea has nine of the fourteen minerals that are essential to human health!

This has always been a popular choice in its native South Africa as it has a pleasant sweetness. Even though this is a herbal tea, you can put milk in it if you want to. It's a great tea for people who need to reduce their sugar intake and could be a popular choice when dieting. Although i

is mostly consumed hot, it tastes great cold with a dash of lemon juice.

You can probably find it in your supermarket so give it a try - your family will probably love it!
