Your new bed is a major financial and personal purchase. When you consider that the average person spends approximately a third of their life time asleep and good quality beds costs between £800 and £3,000 getting it wrong is an expensive mistake.

A new bed is a big purchase. Not only is it expensive, but it's one of the most important pieces of furniture in your home. Combined with the right mattress, your bed is the place where you get much-needed sleep; and where you'll spend around one third of your life. It's important then, to choose the right bed and the best mattress - but which comes first?

Should the Mattress come first?

A mattress essentially provides your sleeping surface and the wrong choice of mattress can cause you to feel uncomfortable when sleeping. It is important to remember that a mattress is a personal choice in terms of comfort and after purchasing a new mattress it will take a time to adjust to a new sleeping surface. Disruptive sleep can have an adverse effect on your well being and make you feel irritable which in turn can place a strain on personal and working relationships. Buying a good quality mattress is a critical part of any bed.

Most people understand what they are looking for in terms of style and functionality when purchasing a new bed base. Whether it's a drawer divan, a metal bed frame or a fabric ottoman each

resents different options. It must be remembered that style and functionality are two separate things and the perfect bed base for you may not be available or suitable with your preferred mattress. The most important thing to consider when purchasing your bed base is the suitability of the mattress which will sit on top. The majority of good quality mattresses are suitable for good quality bases but it is imperative that this is confirmed at point of purchase!

The safest options - buy the base and mattress together

There is little doubt that the safest option when purchasing a new bed is to purchase the bed base and mattress together. Being able to test a mattress on your base of choice is ideal although not always possible. It is important that manufacturer guidelines are adhered to at all times when purchasing your new bed, and special consideration must be paid when purchasing mattresses and bases from different manufacturers.
