Bear and Mountain Lion Protection

Within the last 4 days there were stories about a black bear on the loose, literally in my backyard by our parking garage, and a mountain lion in the Cheyenne Mountain area, right down the road from where I live.

The mountain lion killed a dog in someone's backyard-making for a great news story.

It is that time of year when bears in particular start thinking about hibernation. Translate that to looking for food.

It is also the time of year when diehard campers are out for a last fling and hunters and fishermen and women gear up for their thing.

Even the Sierra Club warns that no one should go into the backcountry without some BEAR SPRAY.

"In an attack the orange-mist of pepper spray covers the brush and envelops the bear, the bear's eyes go wide and breaking brush as she beats a retreat.

Ninety-eight percent of the time, this is how things go with bear spray, biologist Tom Smith has concluded. In a paper published in "The Journal of Wildlife Management," Smith -- along with co-authors Stephen Herrero, Terry Debruyn and James Wilder -- indicates bear spray might be better than a firearm for protecting yourself against the rare attack."

Bear spray is cheaper than a handgun too. It doesn't require much shooting skill. And in none of the 83 cases the scientists examined was a bear-spray user seriously injured.

Bear Spray also works on mountain lions for the same reason. Both animals have highly sensitive senses of smell.

Never purposely confront a bear. Be extremely cautious around bears. They are very quick despite their lumbering appearance. If you are in bear territory it is almost a necessity to have some bear pepper spray nearby.
