Controlling your urge to eat food between meals is very difficult for some of us. You have to have a sweet snack, or a bite of something salty before the need is satisfied. These three tips may help you over some of the rough times.
1. When the urge to eat strikes, try waiting about 10 minutes to see if the cravings seem to go away. This is not always easy and you may actually be hungry. If you have not had any protein all day, you could very well be running on empty. When the craving for junk food strikes hard, substituting healthy "diet" type of foods may not satisfy your needs at all. At these times it is better to eat a little of the food you are actually craving as this will satisfy your need. A small amount of the desired food, eaten in moderation, chewed slowly with a bit of time between bites will do the trick. Follow that up with a full glass of water for a full feeling.
2. If you absolutely can't trust yourself around the food, more drastic measures have to be taken. Remove the offending food from your presence. Don't give in to buying more of that food the next time you are shopping for groceries. When you are locked in the throes of a food craving try brushing your teeth and rinsing you mouth with mouthwash. This will cause the offending food to taste bad for a little while.
3. If you constantly crave one type of snack, you may actually have a nutritional deficiency. A craving for chocolate may indicate a lack of magnesium in your diet. This
an be remedied by eating raw nuts, seeds, and legumes. A need to eat salty foods can be caused by a lack of chloride which can be found in goat's milk, fish, and unrefined sea salt. Other cravings may have their root in similar deficiencies. A visit with a qualified nutritionist may help solve the problem
Food cravings are not a laughing matter when you are battling to control your weight, or have a condition like diabetes 2.
