Why Would You Ever Vacuum Your Pond?

Why on earth would any one ever vacuum their pond? It's not like it's your living room carpet, or the dining room. Is this just some form of over-fastidious behavior, or is it really something that is necessary for your pond's well being? Well it depends on what your pond is going to be used for. If your pond is going to support plants and provide a watering place for the birds, then you don't need to vacuum it. If fact, you really can't vacuum a dirt lined pond. However, a concrete lined pond for your Koi fish should be vacuumed on a regular basis.

How do you vacuum a pond? You don't just take the household vacuum cleaner out on the patio and suck the muck out of the pond. This would ruin your vacuum cleaner and probably kill you in the process. Instead, you need to get a pool vacuum. These are long hoses attached to a pump that filters the water that is circulated through the system.

If you have a small pond, you do not need to get a huge vacuum system designed for an Olympic size swimming pool, it would take longer to set the system up than it would take to actually vacuum your pond. A smaller system with few attachments will service a small pond quite well. If your pond is bigger you might want to consider using an automatic system to clean your pond. This is a small robotic system that operates without you having to direct it. Be mindful, this system is too costly, and is not very effective for the vast majority of backyard ponds and fountains

If you aren't keeping Koi or other fish in your pond, you might consider not vacuuming your pond, just using chemicals or household bleach to keep the algae under control. You will still need to clean your pond on occasion, by draining it and scooping out the accumulated debris from the bottom of your pond. It is a little messy, but for many small ponds, a vacuum system just isn't necessary.
