I have read positive reviews for firming body wash, but I'm relatively sure that it's some kind of "placebo" effect. The customer "thinks" that it's working, when something else is at play. Natural body firming cream, on the other hand, can be truly effective, as long as it contains the right ingredients.
The problem with firming body wash is simply that you rinse it off. In order to effectively "firm", you need a "leave-on" solution. There are several factors that affect the skin's firmness or elasticity. First, let's look at moisture.
The skin's moisture content is equivalent to its elasticity. Scientists can accurately measure moisture and elasticity in a clinical setting. A new natural body firming cream contains a compound called "Functional Keratin".
In clinical studies of just that single ingredient, it has been shown to improve elasticity by 27% after one hour and when measured after 24 hours, there is still a 22% increase in firmness. That's after only one application.
The manufacturers of these washes suggest that results will be seen after two weeks of use. That's a long time to use a product that may or may not be effective. But, another problem is that one of the most popular companies producing it is Dove.
Dove uses petrolatum in their products, as do most of the "big" companies. Petrolatum is mineral oil, a byproduct of gasoline production. It is easily contaminated with cancer-causing compounds and manufacturers are not requir
d to test for them.
Its possible carcinogenic nature is not the only problem. Dermatologists say that petrolatum and other petroleum byproducts interfere with the skin cell rejuvenation. Decreased production of skin cells is another thing that causes sagging.
Creams that contains Functional Keratin has been shown to increase skin-cell proliferation by as much as 160% in as little as five days. In other words, it supports the rejuvenation process.
The other factors that natural body firming cream should address include free radical damage and loss of protein. Free radical damage causes scars, stretch marks, wrinkles and skin-cancer. Of course, it doesn't always cause cancer, but it is the underlying cause.
UV radiation from the sun increases free radical production, so damage is more likely to occur. Antioxidants inhibit free radical production. Some can even repair damage that has already been done.
Coenzyme Q10, a vitamin-like substance, is found in the best natural body firming cream, because it is such an effective antioxidant. But, be careful, it's also found in some of the worst. NIVEA, for example, includes COQ10, but other compounds in the lotion are hazardous.
If you want to find out about the safety of the products you are using, there is an on-line database (Skin Deep) that lists ingredients and ranks popular products according to safety. One of the biggest health hazards, according to Skin Deep researchers is "fragrance".
While many natural oils may have a light scent, many added fragrances are toxic to the nervous system. That's another problem with firming body wash. Everyone that I've looked at contains a fragrance. Stick with the creams, for safety and effectiveness.
