Console Tables - How to Make Modern Ones

So, you have a modern home and have been searching and searching for just the right modern console tables to put to work. So far, you can't find the right one to suit your personality. Maybe it's time to give up on searching and turn to a more creative venture - making the perfect modern console tables.

If you have no interest in an artistic venture, this may not be the route for you, but if you even have a little bit of creative know-how your own personal, and perfect, tables are attainable.

Getting the Right Table

Since you are going to decorate it yourself, getting the right table is not too hard of a job. You have a couple of places you can look.

If you want a new table you can look at stores that sell unfinished furniture. Often they make a variety of beautiful pieces, at a fraction of the cost that you would purchase a finished piece of furniture. While you will have a beautifully crafted piece of furniture that will do the job, it just needs to be painted or decorated and finished, which is what you were planning to do anyways.

If you can't find the perfect unfinished furniture piece, you may well be able to find great tables that only have a simple paint or stain finish and that you can easily strip down to redo.

If you are ok with taking an old, and used, table and giving it new life, you have many more options available to you. From garage sales to thrift stores and auctions there are plenty of old console tables that are the

erfect shape for the pieces you want, but just need a little different finishing look.

One you have selected the tables you need to prepare them to be transformed. If you have purchased unfinished console tables, there is nothing to do, but if you have purchased ones that have paint, stain or other finishes on them, you will need to use one of the many stripping compounds that can be found in a hardware store to take them back to an unfinished wood.

Once you have stripped the console tables down, you have to decide which way to decorate them:

• Paint - One of the easiest ways to create a perfect modern console table is to use paint to create abstract or geometric designs on the top and sides of your bare table.

• Mosaic - If you like furniture pieces that are more tactile, it may be time to make your table three dimensional and have a little more body. This can be done by taking small pieces of tile and creating a mosaic on the top and/or sides of the table. You can use the tiles to create a geometric or abstract design that matches the rest of your décor.

• Additional Pieces - Just because you were given a table of one shape doesn't mean it has to stay that way. If you take a little time to wander around a home décor or hardware store you will see a number of pieces that can be attached to a console table, or any other piece of furniture for that matter. Neatly sculptured pieces of chrome or lacquer, attached to the legs, sides and top of tables can make them look as much like a piece of art as a piece of furniture.

No matter which path you take, remember to keep modern colors (black, white, red) and modern materials (chrome, lacquer, etc) in your mind as you complete your creation.
