Knowing the Difference Between HDL and LDL Cholesterol

A well known question is if a high level of cholesterol is good or not for the organism. There is not a simple answer for the question, as the two cholesterol types can be easily distinguished: LDL and HDL, one being good, while the other is considered as being noxious for the body.

Regarding its aspect, cholesterol is a white waxy matter contained by the sanguine plasma. A while ago, all cholesterol was considered bad, and being connected directly to various heart diseases. Cholesterol carries through the blood system the lipoproteins, which are used by the body in order to restore tissues. Another sort of cholesterol, on the other hand, is bad for the body because it solidifies inside the blood vessels, thus causing blockages in those areas, which in their turn can lead to heart attacks. This kind of cholesterol in high levels is what medics warn us about.

Too much cholesterol is bad, but so is the lack of it in the blood, as it contains both good and bad elements. In order to clearly understand the way the body works, a clear difference should be made between the good cholesterol, HDL (or high density cholesterol) and the bad cholesterol, LDL (low density lipoproteins).

LDL Cholesterol, or the bad cholesterol, is noxious because it deposits itself inside the blood vessels, blocking the way for the blood. The arteries are blocked by this type of cholesterol. It is a known fact that a lot of people have problems with LDL cholesterol. It becomes dangerou

though once a certain concentration is got over, and thus the blood vessels begin to congest. And by blocking the arteries, nutrients are blocked from reaching the tissues and the organs.

The other type of cholesterol, the HDL cholesterol, is regarded as being good, as its role is to transport the lipoproteins through the blood. Also, it has another role, that of eliminating, or pushing away, the bad cholesterol which is blocking the blood vessels.

HDL cholesterol is the smallest form of lipoproteins, but despite this, a third of all HDL resides in the blood. Studies have shown that the higher the level of HDL cholesterol in the body is, the better that organism will be protected by cholesterol-caused diseases, and in particular against hear attacks.
