They say women perspire while men sweat. However much we'd like to deny it, we all have a personal and unique scent. In fact, it's one of the things that draws us to another particular person. Although scientists have not definitively identified a human pheromone - a chemical, produced by an animal or insect, intended to illicit a behavioral response in a same-species member - it is commonly accepted that we respond to the scent of the opposite sex. Some call it chemistry without fully appreciating the depth of the term. It matters little, the terminology. What is important is that the phenomenon exists. And even more important to the purpose of this article, it can be used to help ease the separation anxiety of a long-distance relationship.
Although it's our natural scent that provides the attraction, we can't resist enhancing (or covering) our personal fragrance with perfumes, colognes, lotions and scented products like shampoo and shower gel. We love going to Bath and Body Works and trying samples of the latest products with enticing names like Cherry Blossom, Warm Vanilla Sugar or Sensual Amber. Perfumes and colognes occupy a substantial amount of real estate in the major department stores.
In addition to bringing us olfactory pleasures - think fresh baked apple pie, or a freshly mown lawn - our sense of smell has the remarkable ability to transport us to another time and place by awakening memories that lie beneath the surface of our consciousnes
. It's the closest we're likely to come to H.G. Wells' time machine or Star Trek's transporter... at least in the very near future.
When we're in love, one of the moments we want to hold onto for as long as possible is being in our lover's embrace. There's nothing quite like the feeling of your guy's arms wrapped around you while you snuggle into his neck, breathing in the sexy scent of his cologne. He pulls you close, so he can nuzzle your hair and take in its sweet aroma. Male or female, your beloved's scent lingers in your memory aching to be revisited.
Though you can't always be geographically close, it's possible to close the distance just a bit by enlisting the aid of your gifted nose. Buy a small bottle of your love's favorite perfume or cologne and keep it at your bedside. Just before you turn out the light, open the bottle, close your eyes, and take in the scent of your beloved. You may even want to put a tiny dab on your pillow, right next to where you lay your head. That way, you will breathe in your love's scent just as you drift off to sleep. You might think this will make the missing more intense but you will be amazed at how close you will feel just by triggering that sense of smell.
