Chocolate Allergy - The Myth and The Truth

A Chocolate allergy would be a sweet tooth's worst nightmare, but are there really people who are allergic to chocolate? Many people do seem to report allergic reaction after ingesting chocolate. So surely the conclusion must be they are suffering from chocolate allergies, but not so fast. A chocolate allergy or someone who is allergic to coca does happen, but by far the vast majorities of intolerance and allergic reactions are caused by other ingredients or impurities.

All chocolates are not created equal. Some lower quality and cheaper chocolate is made under less than strict guidelines. Chocolate may contain trace amounts of impurities like rat hairs and insect parts. I am sure your not feeling to much like a chocolate bar right now. The amount of impurities might fall below those allowed by most standards but still maybe be enough to cause some intolerance or a reaction.

Many of the ingredients can cause allergic reactions. Milk, soy and peanuts are common ingredients in chocolate and they are also responsible for many food allergies. Even if a ingredient like peanuts is not listed it may still have trace amounts of peanuts. The problem is that most places that make chocolate also use peanuts and even if peanuts were used on a machine or tray that was cleaned there could still be enough of a trace amount for people who are sensitive to peanuts.

So a Chocolate allergy can happen but it is likely that some other ingredient is to blame for more problem

. If you have a reaction to some chocolate and its the first time you have had trouble eating chocolate it maybe just be some bad chocolate. Its definitely worth it to spend a few bucks more and get the better quality chocolate the next time you treat yourself.
