When it comes to perfume, most people know they like certain fragrances, but most do not really understand what is going on while the perfume is on their skin. Many people have purchased designer perfumes based on how it smells in the bottle, or sprayed briefly into the air where they can get a "whiff" (you will find that I use a lot of technical terms like "whiff" in my articles) of what they believe to be a the "true" scent or fragrance.
Some may spray or dab a little onto their wrist to check out how it smells. When they find one they like, they purchase it and take it home. Then, later that evening they decide to go out for a night on the town with their boyfriend or girl friend or perhaps both!
So they slap on their new "bug juice" (a technical term for perfume!) and head out the door! Then sometime during the evening they begin to notice that not only has the once irresistible fragrance faded, but that now the fragrance has changed somewhat and is no longer that appealing!
She (or he) starts to contemplate what has changed. Are there too many other fragrances in the area from other people? Is the smell of different foods or drinks interfering with the fragrance? Perhaps it is because I am too drunk! No, no, it can't be that!
Or perhaps, the once wondrous perfume itself has changed! Perish the thought.
However, in actuality you should not perish the thought because indeed, perfume does change. That is part of the very es
ence of all perfumes!
You see, all perfumes, not just designer perfumes, are a formulation or blend of a considerable number of fragrances, solvents and other organic or synthetic compounds. They are formulated to have three distinct stages which are referred to as "notes" ("notes" by the way is a real technical term!).
The first note is referred to as the "top" note. It is the most volatile of the fragrance blends. What your first sense of smell experiences is this "top note." This initial impact is designed to catch your eye, or in this case your nose, and make you want to buy this perfume.
This top note is, as I mentioned, highly volatile and only lasts 5-10 minutes! As it evaporates on your skin, it begins to blend in with and into with what is referred to as the "middle" note or heart of the perfume. This is the group of fragrances that will blend in with your own unique skin chemistry. However, it typically takes ten to twenty minutes for this fragrance group in the middle notes to fully materialize.
By then, you're on your way home with your new prized fragrance! They're back at the store saying "GOTCHA!"
But it doesn't end there, either! There is actually a final note, referred to as the "base" note. The "middle" and "base" notes last considerably longer than the "top" note. It is actually the combination of the slowly fading middle notes blended with the oncoming base notes that comprise the real, lasting fragrance!
As you may suspect, the middle notes are far less volatile than the top notes, and the base notes are less volatile than the middle notes. In fact, after several hours, when both the top and middle notes are gone, the base notes are what remain on your skin!
This is why late in the evening (going back to her or his night out on the town) the fragrance from the designer perfume or cologne has changed!
Anna Boren and her husband, Bill Boren, have a website dedicated to wholesale perfume. The site currently explains what to look for when checking out a website from which to purchase perfume. They try in a lighthearted way to inform people about perfumes, their properties and where best to purchase them!

They recently took a random sampling of designer perfumes costs from three of the biggest perfume sites on the internet. Big Discount, Fragrance and FragranceX. They looked at perfumes by Britney Spears (Believe, Curious, Fantasy, Midnight Fantasy), Paris Hilton (Can Can, Heiress, Just Me, Paris Hilton) and Jenifer Lopez (Deseo, Glow, Live, Still). Out of these twelve "top of the line" perfumes, all but one was found to be least expensive at Big Discount! All but one! This is not a trick! Pick 2 or 3 (or more!) perfumes and go to these sites. Big Discount will almost always (that's right, not every time, but usually) be your best deal.
